Gay and lesbian in Africa: law and safety, country by country
In much of Africa, same-sex relationships are still criminalised. These guides set out each country's legal framework and the essential precautions, especially online.
A very uneven legal landscape
Some countries recognise equality, while others punish same-sex relationships with long prison sentences. Before any meeting or trip, check the situation in the country concerned in official travel advice.
Safety first
Fake profiles are sometimes used to entrap app users. Avoid identifiable photos, never share your address, tell someone you trust and contact a specialist organisation if you are threatened.
